What it is
What is Screen Printing?
Screen printing is the time-tested method where each colour in your design gets its own mesh screen, ink is pushed through the screen onto the garment one colour at a time, and the print is cured under heat. It produces a vibrant, opaque, durable print and is the most cost-effective option for high-quantity solid-colour runs.
The trade-off is that screen has high setup costs (one screen per colour), so it shines on jobs with simple artwork and 500+ piece volumes. For 5-colour designs above 2,000 pcs, screen is unbeatable on per-piece economics.
How it is done
The screen printing process
- Colour separation. Your artwork is split into per-colour film positives.
- Screen exposure. A photo-emulsion-coated mesh screen is exposed under UV with the film positive.
- Ink mixing. Pantone-matched plastisol or water-based ink is mixed.
- Print stations. A 6-arm carousel prints one colour per station, with a flash-cure between layers.
- Tunnel cure. Garment passes through a 165°C curing oven that locks ink to fibre.
When to pick this method
Pros & trade-offs
👍 Why pick Screen Printing
- Cheapest per-piece for high-volume solid-colour runs
- Pantone-precise colour matching
- Vibrant, opaque, durable
- Best for ringer-tees, plain logo backs
👀 Things to keep in mind
- High setup cost (one screen per colour) — not for low-quantity jobs
- Not great for gradients or fine photo detail
